The Earth
Our planet, earth, is a sphere hanging in space! The earth has two movements---rotation and revolution.
Rotation: it takes 24 hours (or 1 day) for the earth to make one complete rotation, or spin.
Revolution: it takes the earth 365 days (or 1 year) to make one complete revolution around the sun.
Rotation: it takes 24 hours (or 1 day) for the earth to make one complete rotation, or spin.
Revolution: it takes the earth 365 days (or 1 year) to make one complete revolution around the sun.
What causes day and night?
The reason we have night and day is that as the earth rotates, half of the earth is facing the sun while the other half is facing away from the sun. The part that is facing the sun is having day, while the part facing away from the sun is facing dark space and is having night. The earth spins counter-clockwise so we first see the morning sunlight in the east. As the night comes, we see the last sunlight in the west. A full 24 hour day, on earth, has both day and night (one full spin).
Isn't that FANTASTIC?!!
